November 13, 2024 (3:00 PM – 5:30 PM)
The edited volume “Coercive care, caring coercion: the role of coercion in eating disorder treatment” will be presented at the CNR headquarters marking the fourth event in the “Let’s Meet at CNR for… Pages of Science” series, organized by the CNR Publishing Unit and the Interdepartmental Center for Research Ethics and Integrity (CID Ethics).
This event promotes a series of meetings dedicated to presenting publications from CNR Edizioni, and will take place in Room A of the Central Library adjacent to the CNR Bookshop.
Published in October 2024, Volume III of the series “Research Ethics, Bioethics, Biolaw and Biopolitics” (CNR Edizioni) arises from the urgent need to examine the role of ‘coercion’ in the treatment of eating disorders, with particular attention to practical and ethical aspects. This is a classic bioethical problem that can be framed in various contexts and circumstances but always starts from the assumption that freedom is therapeutic. The goal of the volume is to move beyond an analysis of coercion in its most extreme form – compulsory treatment for severe cases of anorexia nervosa where treatment is refused by the patient despite a high risk of death – and to also consider the everyday forms that coercion can take during the various phases of illness and treatment. The ultimate aim is to provide a tool to make the relationship between treatment and coercion less nebulous and less burdensome for all parties involved: patients, families, and healthcare professionals. Various aspects and degrees of coercion indeed characterize treatment paths for all kinds of eating disorders, even in cases of voluntary admission, as the very ‘nature’ of eating disorders requires daily care practices that are inevitably experienced by patients, and not only by them, as coercive.
The first part of the programme will feature welcome remarks from Sara Di Marcello, Head of the Publishing Unit, and Cinzia Caporale, Coordinator of the Interdepartmental Center for Research Ethics and Integrity (CNR-CID Ethics) and Director of the series “Research Ethics, Bioethics, Biolaw and Biopolitics.” Following this, the volume’s curator, Giulia Sciolli (CNR-CID Ethics), will share the origins of the interdisciplinary experience that led to the book. The book will then be presented by psychiatrist and psychotherapist Massimo Cuzzolaro, founder of the Italian Society for the Study of Eating Disorders (SISDCA) and of the international journal Eating and Weight Disorders, who has taught at the Universities of Rome Sapienza and Tor Vergata for over thirty years and has directed a Centre for eating disorders at the Policlinico Umberto I of the University of Rome Sapienza.
A roundtable will follow, moderated by the volume’s curator and intended as an interdisciplinary dialogue among several authors of the contributions. This will feature Laura Dalla Ragione (Network of Eating Disorder Services of USL1 Umbria), Leonardo Mendolicchio (U.O. Rehabilitation Eating Disorders and Nutrition at Auxologico Piancavallo), Simona Giordano (The University of Manchester), Marco Annoni (CNR-CID Ethics), Angela Molinari (University of Milano Bicocca), and Chiara De Santis (Network of Eating Disorders Services of USL1 Umbria).
The roundtable will conclude with 30 minutes reserved for questions and discussion.
