At the CNR’s Interdepartmental Center for Research Ethics and Integrity (CID Ethics), two specialized Advisory Units have been established in support of the scientific network dedicated to strengthening ethical integrity and quality in scientific research: CID Ethics – Data Protection Advisory Unit and CID Ethics and CID Ethics – Advisory Unit for biobanking and sample collection quality management.
The objective is to provide support to the entire scientific and technical network of the CNR in relation to the complex issue of biobanks and personal data management.
Both Units could contribute significantly to facilitating the work of researchers in the design of their research and in the preparation of the documentation necessary for the request for ethical opinions with authorizing value to the CNR’s Research Ethics and Integrity Committee (Ethical Clearance). The Coordinating responsible for the two Units is Rosangela Barcaro.
CID Ethics – Data Protection Advisory Unit
The Data Protection Advisory Unit provides standard documents and checklists to identify potential critical issues in the processing of personal data within research projects.
It also advises on data minimization measures (privacy by design) and supports researchers and Institute Directors in adhering to national and European regulations. Its functions also include advising on the preparation of the draft Data Protection Impact Assessment Document (DPIA) and organizing update activities.

CID Ethics – Advisory Unit for biobanking and sample collection quality management
The Advisory Unit for biobanking and sample collection quality management provides gap analysis documents and checklists for the evaluation of regulatory and normative profiles related to biobanks.
It also provides guidance on quality aspects regarding the creation and management of specimen collections and supports researchers in preparing specific gap analyses for obtaining certifications and ethical clearances. The Unit offers advice on adherence to standards (ISO 9001, ISO 20387, Accredia, BBMRI), technical aspects of specimen storage, and formulates technical opinions on compliance of biobanks. Lastly, it organizes update activities on the subjects within its sphere of competence.
