Webinar – Explainability and Artificial Intelligence. Technological, ethical and regulatory perspectives

May 16, 2024 (3 p.m. – 6 p.m.)

The Interdepartmental Center for Research Ethics and Integrity (CID Ethics) of CNR is organizing the webinar “Explainability and Artificial Intelligence. Technological, Ethical and Regulatory Perspectives.”

In the European Guidelines for Trustworthy AI (2019), explainability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) was defined as one of the key requirements for trustworthy AI. The European Commission subsequently proposed the AI Act as the first legal framework on AI with the goal of ensuring quality at launch and throughout the life cycle of AI-based systems. Indeed, legal certainty should encourage innovation and investment in such systems while preserving fundamental human rights and freedoms and the founding values of the Union. Specifically, the AI Act establishes new minimum explainability and transparency requirements for a list of AI systems assessed as “high risk.”

From a multidisciplinary perspective, the webinar aims to explore the controversial concept of AI explainability, its ethical-legal implications, and technological challenges. Specifically, based on case studies, ongoing projects of interest, and different methodological and/or disciplinary approaches, it will discuss whether and how the key requirement of explainability can be effectively met and implemented at the technological level, seeking not only to understand what specific explainability obligations are being considered by the community of AI researchers and experts, but also to predict what degree of ethical-legal compliance such systems may possess in the near future and the related expected risks at the individual and social levels.

The webinar proceedings will be published in a volume of the series “Research Ethics, Bioethics, Biolaw and Biopolitics” edited by the Interdepartmental Center for Research Ethics and Integrity and published by CNR Editions.
